Improved TRANSPORTATION
As technology and production of goods in factories increased, people needed better, faster and cheaper ways to transport these things. One increase in transportation were the turnpikes, which capitalist invested in. It was fine for people to travel on these, but if they did, they were required to pay a fee. This not only helped the travelers by making it a faster, easier transportation route, but it also allowed for the capitalist that invested in it to gain money for themselves. Canals were dug to connect inland towns with coastal ports. In the 1800's, the invention of the steam locomotive took place. The steam locomotives were used to pull carriages along the iron rails. These railroads allowed for travelers to go places that the rivers and canals did not. Inventors took the new creation of steam power and applied this idea to improve shipping. People would used steam engines to create steamboats that would be used on the rivers and canals to ship and trade items. The coal needed to fuel the steam engines took up too much cargo space on the ships. New ships were created by the late 1800's and were carrying 10 to 20 times the cargo that the older ships held.
