New Technology
New technology during the late 1700's was a major contributor to the Industrial Revolution. New materials such as cotton, and energy sources such as coal and iron, helped lead to new innovations and inventions that influenced the technology that we have today. Some of the new inventions created during this time included the Steam engine, Water frame, Spinning jenny, and the Cotton gin. The Steam engine first invented by Thomas Newcomen and later improved upon by James Watt, played a key role as the major power source during the Industrial Revolution. Steam power helped operate different machines and locomotives which later helped develop railroads more efficiently. The Water frame, Spinning jenny, and Cotton gin were also relevant to the Industrial Revolution and the growing cotton industry during this time. Before these inventions, the production of cotton was slow under the putting-out system as the demand for these textiles increased. These inventions, developed by Richard Arkwright, James Hargreaves, and Eli Whitney, helped to spin thread at a faster rate, while the Cotton gin separated seeds from raw cotton.Together these inventions increased the rate of cotton production and in turn helped to ship more goods to different places. In the later years of the Industrial Revolution, new technology also helped contribute to the development of electricity as the new power source, and replaced the old method of steam power. The dynamo was one of the first electric motors created by Michael Faraday whose idea is still used today to create new generators and transformers. The development of the electric light bulb by Thomas Edison was also an invention that used electricity as its main source of power and helped to light up entire cities, which helped factories to continue working at night. All in all, these inventions improved technology and were a contributing factor to the Industrial Revolution which helped change the way of production during this time.
